In preparation for the 2025 school year, Bamukunde Foundation visited the Meheba Refugee Camp in Zambia from August 27th to 31st 2025. The aim of this visit was to meet the children whose education is supported by the foundation, but also to strengthen ties with their families and the community.
During the visit, the children expressed their deep gratitude for the opportunity to attend school. They shared how this support has opened up a future that their families couldn’t have provided on their own. The parents also thanked the foundation, not just for the tangible assistance, but also for its presence, which shows them that their daily struggles have not been forgotten.
A growing crisis and urgent needs
The visit highlighted the immense challenges the refugee community continues to face. The camp is grappling with a severe lack of sanitation, widespread hunger and a rising number of children who can’t access an education.
While Bamukunde Foundation has already helped many children stay in school, the need for support is far greater than the current resources. Many parents, grateful yet worried, are afraid their children will have to drop out because they can’t find a sponsor. Without essential items like school supplies or uniforms, many children are at risk of joining the long list of those out of school.
For the children in Meheba, simple items like a notebook, a pen, or a pair of shoes are more than just school supplies. They are a pathway to dignity and a hopeful future.
A Renewed Commitment
Touched by the community’s strength and resilience, Bamukunde Foundation is renewing its commitment to the cause. Recognizing the urgent need, the foundation is making a heartfelt appeal for donations and new sponsors to give every child the chance to learn, dream, and build a future.
The task is huge, but together, it is possible. The foundation is deeply grateful to all who have already provided support and invites new partners to join its mission: to restore the childhoods and futures that war and displacement stole from the children of Meheba.
